(Bernama) - The opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition is on the verge of implosion, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said the polemics and squabbles amongst its component members showed the coalition would not last long.
“By my estimate, it (the coalition) will be history in a year or two. I doubt they will be able to sustain the coalition till the next general election,” he said when asked about the conflicts taking place in the opposition coalition, among them PAS and DAP in Selangor openly quarrelling about the sale of alcohol in the state.
Speaking to Malaysian journalists covering his official visit to Western Australia here today, Muhyiddin said that looking at the pattern of conflicts in PR-controlled states like Kedah, Penang and now Selangor, PR was not able to discharge its responsibilities as mandated by the people.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman said PR was merely a loose coalition unlike the BN, which had an effective constitution and practised collective responsibility.
“I had seen the cracks from early on. They (the components) are unable to agree on many things, which is having a very negative effect on the people,” he said.
As such, he said, the people should be aware and understand that they should not be sacrificing their and children’s future by supporting PR just because they were dissatisfied or did not agree on some issues.
The BN, Muhyiddin said, was always taking steps to improve itself and correct whatever weaknesses it may have.
“Don’t sacrifice the future just because you have been promised the sun, moon and stars,” he said.
On the upcoming state by-election in Permatang Pasir in Penang, Muhyiddin, who is also Umno deputy president, said BN still had a chance of winning it though the constituency was a PAS stronghold.
“Though it is said to be a PAS strong hold, in the past we have won the seat. We have proven no matter how strong PAS is purported to be, it can also be vulnerable,” he said, adding that voters there should make a wise choice as PAS was just incapable of bringing development as proven in Kelantan.Answering a question, Muhyiddin said the Election Commission had fixed the date for the by-election and that if it was to be held before the fasting month started, this would not pose a problem for the BN.
