Menurutnya, peratusan kemiskinan mengikut kumpulan etnik menunjukkan etnik Melayu mencatatkan peratusan paling tinggi iaitu sebanyak 73 peratus diikuti India, 20.4 peratus, Cina 5.5 peratus dan etnik lain sebanyak 1.1 peratus.
13,990 families living below poverty line in state

BATANG Kali tops the list of areas in Selangor with the most number of poor people, with 1,522 families living below the poverty line.
There are a total of 13,990 families living below poverty line in the state.
The Selangor Health, Estate Workers’ Affairs, Poverty Eradi-cation and Caring Government committee chairman Dr Xavier Jeyakumar said this in reply to a question by Saari Sungib (Hulu Kelang-Pas) about poverty.
“Families with a household income of RM1,500 are considered as living below the poverty line.
“Among the factors for poverty are economic factors, death of the breadwinner, loss of income, and the individual’s mindset and attitude.
“Thus, the state government is compiling information and data on poverty in order to aid the recipients,” he said.
He added that the poverty percentage in terms of ethnic groups are: Malay (73%), Chinese (5.5%), Indian (20.4%) and others (1.1%).
Dr Xavier said efforts to eradicate poverty required a hands-on approach.
“The economic development has no meaning if there are still people in Selangor living in poverty.
“The Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES) programme, which transcends race, religion, age, and political leaning, aims to kill two birds with one stone by giving back the state’s revenue to the people as well as reducing their burden, especially for those in the low-income group,” he said.
